Brief History of Lake Mazaska North Shore Cooperative
During the 1950’s and 60’s, farmer Bill Wadekamper allowed cabins to be constructed on his land bordering the north shore of Lake Mazaska. Rents were around $50 a year for use of the land during those years. One cabin, #47, owned the small plot of land under their cabin due to a quid pro quo event with farmer Bill. In the 1970’s and 80”s, DNR rule changes disallowing construction of cabins within 100 feet of lakes. The cabins that were already built were allowed to remain with grandfathering provisions.
Bill’s daughter, Arlene, inherited the land and kept the arrangements intact for a long time. By the early 2000’s, Arlene was becoming elderly and had likely lost interest in any management of the cabins. In 2005, Arlene took the simplest path to divesting herself of her 74 acre lakeside property – she sold it to a developer. Cabin owners were caught in an unexpected and precarious situation! Per zoning laws, the developer would not be able to build anything on their new property without first eliminating all of the lakeside cabins. Also, as a result of the grandfather provisions allowing our cabins to exist, the land could not be separated into separate parcels.
In 2005, a number of cabin owners took action to organize a business entity to address the sale of the land to the developer. This task was very complicated and after numerous meetings, committed leadership, and majority common sense of the cabin owners, the Lake Mazaska North Shore Cooperative was formed. The LMNSC members then raised the funds to assume the land purchase agreement the developer had with Arlene.“ The original LMNSC board members were: Ralph Dathe, Mike Fleming, Allen Nelson, Bill Oertli, Denny Nelson, Gene Broman, and Steve Pleschourt.
Since 2005, approximately 30 of the original owners are still here, and we all lived happily ever after!
Since the beginning, LMNSC members have taken pride in the Co-op as “Their Home Away From Home”
